Making posters is a very important part of the PhD/scientists journey. Posters are a visual method for communicating your work to an audience and should be the starting point for further discussions. However, actually making a poster is long and can be difficult. Restrictions on templates, conflicting opinions on content and reaching deadlines. Here I display some of my previous posters and some comments on the work.
Pro:
Made a multi-use poster
Easy to put together in PowerPoint
Good, general overview of the entire lab
Gave me the opportunity to make a good source folder for all the high quality images
Con:
Some of the image quality is poor
A lot of text on the slides and visually looks very crowded
Not too much new information compared to previous poster
Next time:
Limit how many people ask for opinions on poster (conflicting views on content and order can make a quick job a lot longer)
Keep a centralised database of all the images/figures for future projects
Pro:
Learning opportunity for joining a new team
Good, general overview of the Fab team
A combination of previous posters and work in a nice, clean poster
Con:
Formatting took forever (originally a PowerPoint file but used Keynote to edit)
A lot of the information is still new to me so was not clear what to include
Making the figures took a long time in Inkscape because I am out of practice
Next time:
SVG images can not be inserted into Keynote. Best option is to paste it into powerpoint, make the image really big and then copy that over to Keynote.
Add all the logos to the poster from the different groups
Less text and bigger images
